We are excited to introduce the newest members of the ISIAQ Board of Directors, elected by the membership in the 2026 election. All new members began their terms at the Annual General Meeting of the ISIAQ membership, which was held on Tuesday, June 16 at the Indoor Air 2026 conference. Honoring Excellence: The ISIAQ Academy of Fellows Awards One of the highlights of the Indoor Air conference was the opportunity to celebrate the exceptional minds driving our field forward during the ISIAQ Academy of Fellows Awards. This year’s ceremony was a powerful reminder of the dedication, innovation, and leadership that define our community. In addition, the future of our field looked brighter than ever as we honored two Yaglou Awardees for their exceptional work as promising early-career researchers: Dr. Shanshan Shi and Dr. Jianbang Xiang.
Dr. Shanshan Shi is an Associate Professor at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Nanjing University in China. She received her PhD from Tsinghua University in China and conducted postdoctoral research at Duke University in the US. Her research focuses on indoor SVOCs and PM, linking mechanistic modelling with real-world exposure and human health. Dr. Shi has published extensively in leading journals including The Lancet Planetary Health, One Earth, Environmental Science & Technology, and Building and Environment. Her work has received international recognition, including the ASHRAE Grant-in-Aid, the Cell Press Best Paper Award, and He Xingzhou Young Academic Award in China.
Dr. Jianbang Xiang is an Associate Professor at the School of Public Health at Sun Yat-sen University in China. Trained at Tsinghua University and with postdoctoral experience at the University of Washington in the US, Dr. Xiang leads a productive program in smart sensing, exposure assessment, and the links between indoor environments and mental health.
Dr. Xiang has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles, including publications in The Lancet, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Environmental Science & Technology. He has received the Outstanding Young Researcher Award from National Science Foundation of China, one of China’s most competitive early-career research awards. The pinnacle of the ceremony came with the presentation of our most prestigious honor, the Pettenkofer Award, which was awarded to Catherine Noakes.
Professor Noakes is recognized for her outstanding scholarly achievements and major contributions to advancing knowledge in the indoor air sciences, especially in the areas of airborne infection transmission and ventilation in indoor environments.
Her work has had a profound impact on our understanding of how indoor environments influence the transmission of infectious diseases and has provided important scientific guidance for healthier and safer buildings.

Indoor Air Conference Wraps Up with Resounding Success!
The global indoor air quality community came together in a major way at the recently concluded Indoor Air conference! It was an unforgettable week of collaboration, cutting-edge science, and forward-thinking initiatives that proved just how vital our field continues to be. The event was an absolute triumph, bringing together nearly 1,000 global experts from 47 different countries. Over the course of the week, attendees dived into a massive, diverse program that featured 606 oral presentations and 247 poster presentations.
Highlights from the Floor
Beyond the incredible numbers, the heartbeat of the conference was defined by community, advocacy, and a few unforgettable moments. In line with our mission to uplift the next generation, ISIAQ was proud to support 12 student members, enabling them to travel, present, and network with leading minds. We also celebrated a wave of new signatories to the Global Pledge for Healthy Indoor Air, reinforcing a shared global commitment to safer built environments.
Perhaps the most inspiring moment of the week belonged to our youngest presenter ever: an incredible 11-year-old delegate. Supported by the Corsi-Rosenthal Foundation, she captivated attendees with a presentation detailing her firsthand experience building a Corsi-Rosenthal box, reminding us all of the power of grassroots public health tools. Save the Date for Healthy Buildings America 2027
The Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems at Syracuse University is pleased to serve as host for the next Healthy Buildings America conference. The conference will be held June 20–23, 2027, at the Syracuse Marriott Downtown in Syracuse, New York, USA.
Under the theme “Intelligent Environments: Designing, Retrofitting and Operating for a Healthy, Affordable and Resilient Future,” Healthy Buildings 2027 will cover a wide range of research topics cutting across multiple scales of built environmental systems. Join an ISIAQ Committee!
The ISIAQ Board of Directors invites members to consider volunteering to serve on one of the Board’s four committees. Members may apply to participate on one or more of the following committees:
Communications Committee: The Communications Committee includes review of the website; social media management; newsletter review; PR, media requests and management.
Conference Committee: The Conference Committee is tasked with overseeing ISIAQ conferences, including evaluating host proposals, proposing new features and functions of conferences, and more.
Membership Committee: The Membership Committee is responsible for monitoring all aspects of the ISIAQ membership, including member benefits, corporate membership, retention, education, and invitations.
Publications Committee: This new committee will lead all publications initiatives for the Society.
Committee terms will last through 2028, and each committee aims to meet virtually four times a year. Committee members will be expected to be active ISIAQ members throughout their tenure. Interested individuals can submit their application via this form. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the committee is full. Please direct any questions you may have about any committee or participation expectations to the ISIAQ Secretariat at info@isiaq.org. |

Fresh Formats, Bright Futures: Celebrating the ISIAQ Rapid Research Winners! Innovation is at the heart of ISIAQ, and we are constantly looking for new ways to elevate the voices of our students and early-career researchers. This year, we took that mission a step further with the launch of our brand-new Rapid Research Now & Next competition!
Conceptualized by ISIAQ Student Representative Rachel Hurley, this exciting initiative challenged participants to distill their complex, impactful research into fast-paced, high-energy presentations. Empowering Our Community: Leadership in Indoor Air Webinar Series Wrap-Up
We are thrilled to celebrate the successful conclusion of our bimonthly Leadership in Indoor Air webinar series! Designed to equip our community with essential skills in leadership and scientific communication, this series proved to be an incredibly impactful member benefit.
The engagement from our community was outstanding, with over 80 ISIAQ members participating in one or more of the sessions. From diving into communication styles and conflict management to hearing firsthand insights during interviews with distinguished ISIAQ leaders, participants gained practical tools to help ensure their expertise makes an impact where it matters most. Thank you to everyone who logged on, shared their perspectives, and invested in their professional growth. |

As part of our commitment to driving global change, ISIAQ is proud to partner with the Air Club. Air Club is a global coalition of champions of clean indoor air, and ISIAQ was a founding signatory to their global pledge for healthy indoor air.
The Air Club is actively on the hunt for examples of notable action on healthy indoor air. They want to identify, connect with, and uplift organizations that are leading the charge toward safer, healthier indoor spaces.
