What are those smells from a live Christmas tree? Check out the study conducted by Dustin Poppendieck and his colleagues, who characterized the chemicals emitted from a freshly cut Christmas tree in an environmentally controlled chamber using a proton transfer reaction-mass spectrometer. They found that it can release comparable amounts of monoterpenes as personal care products, air fresheners, or other common indoor sources, and likely have modest impacts on indoor chemistry that diminish with time. Did you know that the same intensity of radiation can produce different degrees of thermal perception depending on its wavelength? To find out more, read this article with the first quantitative analysis of wavelength depending on thermal perception, including a new mathematical model based on a heat diffusion equation which interprets the results and predicts thermal perception caused by radiation of different wavelengths: “Quantitative analysis of wavelength dependence of thermal perception”

Are you interested in learning more about ventilation and CO2 distributions in classrooms? Recent research delves into natural ventilation in UK classrooms using CFD simulations to explore the spatial variations of CO2 distributions and their relationship with different ventilation configurations. This sheds light on the accuracy of CO2-based ventilation rate estimates. The authors offer insights on ventilation flow rates, sensor placement location, and ventilation characteristics. Did you know there was a ’honeymoon-hangover’ effect not only in marriages, but also in workplace satisfaction with the indoor environmental quality (IEQ)? Check out the new study conducted by Xiong and colleagues in more than 20.000 office workers in Australia and learn how there is a clear dependency of occupants’ satisfaction with IEQ and the length of time they had been allocated to their workspace. The authors also discuss the implications of their findings for post-occupancy evaluation surveys for facility managers. Your indoor high can impact others. Vaping or smoking cannabis indoors can lead to secondhand and thirdhand exposures. Thirdhand exposures were most significant for semi-volatile species. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to control the number of runny noses in day care centers? An intervention study by Vartiainen et al looked at the effectiveness of room air cleaners in two day care units in Finland, showing a reduction in absent days related to respiratory infections when compared to the rest of the units in the same city. The clinical results are presented as a proof-of-concept to validate a theoretical model estimating the risk of transmission. Brainstorm with us at Indoor Air 2024!
Looking for ways to get involved in ISIAQ and have a specific project in mind you’d like to take on? Check out the Innovation Network – ISIAQ’s newest platform to support member projects and collaboration. The Innovation Network is comprised of ISIAQ Research Collaboratives. Research Collaboratives focus on specific topics relevant to indoor air quality and climate, and work toward specific outcomes. Join us at the Indoor Air conference on Monday, July 8 at 5:00pm in room 313 A/B/C to learn more about the Innovation Network, brainstorm ideas, and connect with other members interested in building out projects.
The first Research Collaborative has already launched! Chaired by Dusan Licina, Research Collaborative “Developing a Global IAQ Database” is working on building out a database for global indoor air quality (IAQ). Having access to indoor air quality dataset from all around the world will support scientific inquiries about indoor air quality controls. If this is a project you’d be interested in participating in, this research collaborative is looking for individuals who'd like to contribute in the following ways:
- To share relevant information for the realization of this project
- To contribute with indoor air quality dataset
- To become an active member of the project

Sign up for Sunday’s Master Classes! Master Classes (previously Summer School) are a unique opportunity to rapidly “master” emerging topics related to indoor environmental quality and practice in these areas. These sessions are led by industry, academic, and government leaders in our field and are useful for anyone (students, practitioners, researchers, faculty) who want to quickly learn about the latest advances and applications of these systems. This year, we focus on two particularly relevant topics: Next Generation Indoor Air Quality Monitoring and Contemporary Germicidal Irradiation Applications. The classes will also include “What I Wish Someone Had Told Me” information for those new to these areas, as well as ample opportunity for questions. Master Classes are held on Sunday, July 7. Registration is $250 and can be added during the normal registration process or added on later.

Conference themes
The conference will cover several key themes focused on healthy and sustainable buildings. Architecture and design topics will include the carbon footprint of building materials, daylight, the roles of architects and practitioners, energy efficiency, climate change, and building certifications. Climate challenges will address indoor air quality, building physics, energy use, insulation, ventilation, and well-being in both cold and warm climates.
Additionally, the conference will explore how to translate scientific findings into actionable policies and regulations for stakeholders and policymakers. We anticipate a dynamic exchange of knowledge and ideas that will foster interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.

The ISIAQ Board of Directors invites members to consider volunteering to serve on one of the Board’s four committees. Members may apply to participate on one or more of the following committees: Communications Committee: The Communications Committee includes review of the website; social media management; newsletter review; PR, media requests and management. Conference Committee: The Conference Committee is tasked with overseeing ISIAQ conferences, including evaluating host proposals, proposing new features and functions of conferences, and more.
Membership Committee: The Membership Committee is responsible for monitoring all aspects of the ISIAQ membership, including member benefits, corporate membership, retention, education, and invitations.
Publications Committee: This new committee will lead all publications initiatives for the Society.
Committee terms will last through 2026, and each committee aims to meet virtually four times a year. Committee members will be expected to be active ISIAQ members throughout their tenure.
Interested individuals can submit their application via this form. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the committee is full. Please direct any questions you may have about any committee or participation expectations to the ISIAQ Secretariat at info@isiaq.org
