Name: Rita Lam
Affiliation: ISIAQ Student Representative
What inspired you to run for student representative for the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate?:
My first encounter with ISIAQ was at the conference Healthy Buildings America 2021, which was also my very first international conference I attended as a graduate student. I was deeply impressed by this community as everyone is so supportive and passionate about indoor environment just like me. More importantly, ISIAQ really tries to nurture the growth of young researchers, which inspired me to join this amazing society and run for the student representative.
What are your primary goals as a student representative on the Board of Directors?:
My primary goal is to provide unique insights from the student’s perspectives to the BOD at ISIAQ in all disciplines. As the student representative, I frequently ask the questions: “What can we do to enhance students experience with ISIAQ? How do we encourage more students to engage in our society?”. This is important as students constitute to a large portion our community, and listening to their needs and fostering their professional growth are the cornerstones to advance the field of indoor air research. With this initiative, my primary responsibility includes improving the mentorship program, organizing student-oriented webinars, and participating in the membership committee to better serve the students in our society.
How do you plan to involve other students in the Society's activities and increase student participation?:
There are many exciting things that can be done to improve student’s experience with our society. One of the unique programs that ISIAQ offers is the mentorship program, though because of the COVID-19 pandemic this program has been on pause. This mentee-mentor relationship can be extremely valuable for students’ experience at ISIAQ, and we certainly want to resume this program with better structures to motivate more student engagement in our ISIAQ society. In addition to the mentorship program, student-oriented webinars have also been organized to help students with professional growth, and we wish to continue this webinar series every year. We conducted a survey among students to find out what topics they are most interested in, and then invited experienced scientists in the field to guide students through their challenges along their professional journey.
How can students use their unique perspectives and experiences to contribute to the Society's efforts in promoting indoor air quality and climate research and advocacy?:
Students and early career scientists/engineers are the future of this community. With more talented individuals devoting themselves in solving the pressing issue of improving indoor air quality, we are one step closer towards cleaner air and better environment. We as students can contribute to this society in many ways, such as advocating the importance of improving indoor air quality to the public, promoting collaborations and inter-disciplinary research, and conducting translational and innovative studies to solve the raising indoor pollution challenges.
