Position summary

EPFL invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering. The projects will be based in the Human-Oriented Built Environment Lab (HOBEL) at the EPFL Fribourg campus and Smart Living Lab. The research focus of HOBEL is centered on advancing the knowledge in the following domains:

  • Indoor environmental quality
  • Building ventilation
  • Pollutant dynamics in indoor air and exposure science
 
Broadly, the main goal of this EU-funded project is to advance the knowledge of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) assessment in residential and educational buildings in Europe. This effort includes but is not limited to the development of improved metrics for IEQ assessment; understanding the impact of building retrofits on IEQ with particular focus on indoor air quality and thermal comfort; performing extensive measurements of IEQ by means of internet-connected low-cost sensing solutions and providing feedback to occupants in intuitive manners.

Entry requirements
Strong candidates will have demonstrated expertise in the themes listed above, and will seek to pursue experimental and field-based research. Successful candidates must hold a PhD degree (or to be near its completion) in Mechanical, Civil, Architectural Engineering or a related discipline. Demonstrated skills in data analytics using programming languages such as MATLAB, R, Python, or similar, are also required. Preferred candidates will have academic records that underline their ability to publish in top-ranked peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate should be bright-minded, passionate, team-oriented, and should have proficient written and oral communication skills in English.

Timelines and working conditions
Intended start date for postdoctoral fellowship is 1st January 2023. The successful candidate is expected to work in the international group for a period of 2 years with possibility of renewal. Positions will remain open until filled.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience in leading research projects and teams related to the topics noted above. There will also be possibilities to contribute to the lab’s teaching activities, if desired. The successful candidate will also have full access to all EPFL research facilities in Fribourg and on the main campus in Lausanne. We also offer national and international development opportunities through collaborations within academia and with industry. The annual salary is very competitive compared to other universities in Europe and in the USA.
